The European Hygienic Design and Engineering Group (EHEDG) is a consortium of equipment manufacturers, the food industry, research institutes and public institutions, which was established in 1989 with the aim of improving the level of hygiene in the processing and packaging of food.
European legislation requires that food be handled, prepared, processed and packaged in a hygienic manner using hygienic equipment under hygienic conditions (food, equipment and material hygiene).
Industry chooses its own way of meeting these conditions. EHEDG provides practical advice on the hygienic aspects of meeting these requirements. Since food safety is not limited to Europe, EHEDG actively supports the international harmonisation of standards and regulations.
